Abstract: The Czernin garden palace in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt, designed by Giovanni Battista Maderna, has not survived, yet its form is preserved in a remarkable set of drawings held in the Czernin archive. The lecture aims to situate the building within the context of contemporary architecture in Vienna and Bohemia. Likely inspired primarily by the works of Jean-Baptiste Mathey, Maderna’s project may be seen as an instance of a Bohemian artistic contribution abroad. A rich body of archival sources also provides for a closer investigation of the planning and construction process, shedding new light on the role of Hermann Jakob Czernin as a patron of architecture.
Zur Person: Tadeáš Kadlec is a Ph.D. candidate at Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague. His doctoral research focuses on the painter Johann Peter Molitor and the contexts of his work in Bohemia and Central Europe. He also works on Baroque architecture and recently co-authored a monograph on the Slavata Palace in Prague (2024).
